While researching the Piland's of Isle of Wight County, Virginia, I came across the transcript of Isaac Faulcon's will in which he left his plantation to his son Jacob Faulcon in 1727 -- the will was witnesses by George Piland. I didn't give much thought to this, other than it gave a time frame for George Piland's life in the Isle of Wight. (Southside Virginia Families, by John Bennet Boddie, found at Google Books)
The next day I went on a road trip, unconnected with my family research, down the James River, first on the North Side, and then up the South Side. Out of curiosity, I stopped at a place called Smith's Fort (as it was labeled on my map) only to discover that it was the site of a small manor house of a middle-class merchant, named Jacob Faulcon. The house had been purchased during the depression by Rockefeller and donated to the APVA.
Just a weird coincidence, but interesting all the same.

Wives of Joseph Relfe
Joseph Relfe died in 1818 in Pasquotank County with 4 orphans: Stephen, Joseph, Malachi, and Josiah Relfe.
In the Old Albemarle County, North Carolina, Pasquotank Precinct (County) births, marriages, deaths, brands, and flesh marks, &; county claims, 1691-1833, Joseph Relfe married Mary Trueblood on May 29, 1798. This date is well before the births of the four orphans. (According to the Estate Records cited below, Stephen came of age in 1826, giving him a birth year of approx.1805, and Josiah came of age in 1836, giving him a birth year of approx. 1815 -- they are always listed in order found above, suggesting birth order.)
However, is she the mother of all four orphans?

Sarah Pennisten
Sarah Pennisten is a mirage. Somehow, I have this last name attached to a Sarah, wife of Thomas Relf. How the surname and the given name became attached to each other is lost in my memory. But with this proposition, that Sarah is indeed a Pennisten, I've begun to research the existence of Pennistens in Indiana. A Sarah Pennisten does not emerge from the mists in Madison County, Indiana, the county of my focus. Thomas, husband of Sarah, was from Madison County, Indiana, and according to the 1880 US Federal Census for Solomon TWP, Norton County, Kansas they are both from Indiana -- it makes sense, it not certainity, that they would both be from Madison County. But sadly, in 1870, Sarah Pennisten is illusive.
Beginnings
This is my notebook of odd clipings found on the internet related to people in my family tree. As I find information, speculate, and draw conclusions, I'll place them here for those that wish to refine and extend my thoughts on who these people are.
